Investment approach

Process before prediction.

A framework for asking better questions about businesses, value and risk—without pretending that uncertainty can be eliminated.

01

Understand the business

Identify how the company creates value, earns revenue, serves customers and differentiates itself from competitors.

02

Read the financials

Study revenue quality, profitability, cash flow, leverage, working capital and consistency of reported performance.

03

Assess management

Consider governance, transparency, incentives and the record of capital allocation.

04

Think about valuation

Compare price with reasonable estimates of business value, recognising that assumptions can be wrong.

05

Understand the context

Examine industry structure, competitive forces, regulation, technology and relevant macroeconomic conditions.

06

Respect risk

Consider downside scenarios, concentration, liquidity, uncertainty and the possibility of permanent capital loss.

Decision principles

Questions matter more than confident forecasts.

A disciplined process can improve the quality of decisions, but it cannot guarantee a particular result.

  • What would need to be true for this business to succeed?
  • What could cause the investment case to fail?
  • Which assumptions have the greatest effect on valuation?
  • Is the balance sheet resilient under stress?
  • What evidence would change my view?
  • Does the potential return justify the risks?
